Select Board Opposes $10,000 Funding for Regional Housing Training Program

Key Points

  • $10,000 requested for the Lower Cape Housing Institute
  • Funding supports training for town staff and volunteers on housing issues
  • Select Board recommended indefinite postponement of the article
  • CPC continues to support the program as part of a regional housing strategy

A request for $10,000 to support the Lower Cape Housing Institute has met with resistance from the Harwich Select Board. Article 35 aims to fund the town's participation in the Community Development Partnership program, which provides training for municipal employees and volunteers on regional housing crises and planning.

CPC Chair Kathy Green spoke in favor of the funding, noting that the program offers webinars and educational programs vital for local committee members. While acknowledging that Harwich hasn't had the best participation in past years, Green emphasized the value of the institute’s resources. They have a great program, she said, urging more town members to take advantage of the training.

Despite the CPC’s support, Town Administrator James McGrail reported that the Select Board has voted to recommend indefinite postponement of the article. This recommendation signals a potential hurdle for the funding on the Town Meeting floor, where a member of the CPC will likely have to make an affirmative motion to bring the matter to a vote.
