Town Eyes $225,000 Partnership to Preserve 17 Acres Near Robins Pond

Key Points

  • $225,000 requested for 17-acre land preservation project
  • Protects 270 feet of frontage on Robins Pond and public drinking water
  • Partnership between the Town and Harwich Conservation Trust
  • Supported by Select Board and Finance Committee

Article 40 proposes a $225,000 partnership with the Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) to preserve 17 acres of upland and wooded wetlands near Robins Pond. The acquisition would protect 270 feet of pond frontage and provide a critical buffer for the town’s water supply.

CPC Chair Kathy Green highlighted the environmental significance of the land, noting it sits within a "zone two wellhead protection" area. It protects drinking water and the water quality of the public water supply, Green stated. The property abuts several existing conservation areas, including the Herring River Greenway, creating the potential for a vast, connected recreational network in the future.

Town leadership is aligned on the acquisition, with both the Select Board and the Finance Committee recommending approval of the funding. The project is seen as a key step in protecting natural resources while expanding the town's open space inventory.
