Town Proposes $138,000 Study to Address Hinckley's Pond Cyanobacteria Blooms

Key Points

  • $138,000 requested for a diagnostic assessment of Hinckley's Pond
  • Study addresses ongoing public health issues related to cyanobacteria
  • Pond health is critical to one of the state's largest herring runs
  • Recommended for approval by Select Board and Finance Committee

In response to persistent water quality issues, Article 44 asks for $138,000 to conduct a new diagnostic assessment of Hinckley's Pond. The study is aimed at understanding why the pond continues to experience degraded water quality and cyanobacteria blooms despite an alum treatment performed in 2019.

CPC Chair Kathy Green emphasized that the assessment is critical for both public health and the environment. It is critical to the town's herring run which is one of the largest in the state, Green said. The findings of the diagnostic study will be used to inform future safety and remediation efforts for the pond.

The Select Board and the Finance Committee have both recommended Article 44 for approval. The funding reflects the town’s ongoing commitment to water quality and the protection of its major ecological assets.
