Key Points
- $667,500 requested for exterior renovation of the 185-year-old church
- Building is a landmark on West Harwich’s historic Captain's Row
- Town will secure the investment with an historic preservation deed restriction
- Recommended for approval by the CPC, Select Board, and Finance Committee
The preservation of a 185-year-old landmark along Captain's Row is the focus of Article 39, which asks Town Meeting for $667,500. The funds would be used for the exterior renovation and stabilization of the historic West Harwich Baptist Church.
CPC Chair Kathy Green described the church as one of the most significant buildings in town,
noting that the project will enhance the gateway into Harwich along Route 28. The current request follows a 2022 Town Meeting vote to preserve the structure. This new funding specifically targets the exterior to prevent further degradation and prepare the building for its future role as the West Harwich Meeting House.
To protect the town's substantial investment, Green explained that Harwich will hold a historic preservation deed restriction on the property. This ensures the exterior cannot be altered or changed
in the future. The project has received broad support, with both the Select Board and the Finance Committee recommending approval.
